Trouser Shorts

I’m sitting here in very sunny, hot Florida. A 180 from the usual cold, foggy San Francisco. A much needed thawing after spending the entire summer in layers. I’ve been craving summer heat having grown up on the east coast and not being used to a cold summer. So, this is a very nice few weeks of hot summer weather before heading home. A chance to wear all my shorts, light tops, and flowy dresses without layers.

For shorts, I mainly packed trouser shorts (the main shorts I own) with me to mix and match with tank tops and t-shirts. Plus some fun dresses. A pretty casual suitcase for this trip. But, what I love about a classic suit short (and why I have so many), is they work seamlessly from summer to fall. With a few styling tweaks, these bottoms can span multiple seasons. While I’m here, I’ll be wearing my light linen ones with brighter, more tropical tops. However, I can’t help but think about how I’ll wear them once I get home.

  1. J.Crew sweater. 2. J.Crew Navy blazer. 3. J.Crew Tan blazer. 4. J.Crew trouser shorts. 5. Repetto ballet flats.

This morning, I saw the outfit in the top left of the image above as part of J.Crew’s new fall collection. It stood out to me as my perfect, every day kind of fall look. Simple, classic, and effortless. It feels like the epitome of preppy fall. And, if anyone would do preppy fall correctly, it would be J.Crew! I very much will be recreating this look for the cooler weather ahead. For example, either as a matching suit or mix and match blazers with shorts. I love the idea of white suit shorts with a classic wool, plaid blazer. It feels like the perfect outfit for one foot leaving summer and one stepping into fall.

Meanwhile, while I sit here enjoying the heat and wearing the lightest layers I can, in my linen shorts and bikini top, I can’t help but also look forward to bringing my favorite pants into fall! Hoping to soak up as much warmth now that I won’t be able to wait to layer on my wool blazers and fisherman sweaters.
