What describes San Francisco weather better than not quite cold and not quite hot? It’s comparable to the cool temps of both spring and fall. Where it’s cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon, and then cold again when the sun goes down. So as this kind of weather approaches, I wanted to share some of my favorite wardrobe basics for this time of year.
I prefer more simple items for my wardrobe basics. Pieces that can easily mix and match to create different looks from a limited selection. Then add more fun and feminine accessories to style your looks up. Or, of course, keep it simple for busy or just minimal feeling days.
Trouser Shorts, Pullover Sweaters, Loafers and a simple Barn Coat

For this weather, layers are always key. Especially light ones you can easily fit in your bag or carry on your arm to constantly switch from on to off.
To start, a good pullover sweater is the perfect layer. My favorite is this Banana Republic cashmere one that easily fits over a t-shirt and also under a coat. Then a barn coat is a nice warmer outer layer that’s not too light or heavy. I really like this plaid one for fall outfits!
I personally prefer a trouser short for this kind of weather. These ones are so good and my favorite right now. The short length for temperature control works perfectly with a sweater and coat.
As for shoes, a comfortable boat, loafer, or oxford adds a nice dressed up feel to these more casual items.
A Button Down, Midi Skirt, Flats and a Chore Coat (or Anorak)

Add into the rotation a go-to button down in both neutral and fun colors. They go with everything! Plus a midi skirt and flats for more feminine touches.
For more coat options to layer with, you can’t go wrong with a chore coat or an anorak. This coat from a local SF brand is one I wear almost every day and the one I’m wearing in the photo above. The all denim version is so pretty and it also comes in shorter lengths.
Trousers, T-Shirts and a Sneaker

For more casual wardrobe basics, I like to have a few t-shirts I reach for. This Madewell one has a really nice material and fit. Then a comfortable sneaker – my go-to are both Vans classics and checkered slip ons.
Dress the two up a bit with a nice vintage-y trouser. This pair from Shaina Mote are an absolute favorite! They don’t have a corporate look and drape really nicely for a loose, comfortable fit.
That sums it up for my in-between weather basics for mixing and matching easy, everyday outfits. Items perfect for layering and re-wearing for different temperatures!
