Ways to Wear a Black Polo Shirt

Lacoste polo, Everlane shorts (similar)

As spring nears (and I could really use some spring weather!), I’m excited to trade in my multiple layers for short-sleeve tops. While we don’t always have typical seasons here, it’s been especially cold and windy the past few weeks here in SF, so some warm weather by the end of March definitely feels like the start of spring.

My black Lacoste polo is one of my favorite go-to tops for warmer days. Over the past few years, I haven’t seen much of the classic tennis shirt being worn, but this spring it seems to be making a comeback. I’ve noticed quite a few new ones online from different brands to shop (like these here and here). Exciting!

It’s such an easy top to wear comfortably, and it effortlessly creates a classic, chic workday look or a simple weekend outfit.

I remember saving my babysitting money in high school to buy my first Lacoste polo. They were $72, and it took a few gigs to afford the black one I’d been eyeing. So, buying a new one last year felt nostalgic and exciting. Welcoming this long-time favorite back into my closet.

Below, I’ve put together four ways to wear this classic black polo this season. Some simple outfit ideas that are easy to wear but far from boring. I chose a minimal color palette for these looks, as I’ve been really into black, white, and beige lately, and have drawn inspiration from outfits of the ’30s. However, any of these pieces could easily be swapped for something more colorful!

Banana Republic skirt (similar), Chanel flats (similar)

Long, flowy skirts were definitely super trendy last summer, but I’m going to ignore the oversaturation and continue wearing mine. Sticking to a more traditional style when I style it. The best way to participate in a trend because you genuinely like the item, without blending in with everyone else, is to style it uniquely. J.Crew is a great place to find something preppy or dressy, like this one.

Shaina Mote trousers, Ferragamo heels

I’m wearing my favorite trousers here, but a black polo would look great with striped trousers like these or gingham ones like these (I love both!). You could definitely go for a capri pant for a more fitted look – those are on my to-buy list.

Banana Republic shorts (similar), Carmina shoes

Trouser shorts are my weakness! Especially after moving to San Francisco where I can wear them year-round with the right layering technique. Banana Republic is always my go-to, and I can’t resist picking up a new pair every spring. These and these are perfect!

If you’re starting to get warmer weather and can rock a shorter short, all black is always chic! Add some jewelry for a pop of color, and it’s an effortless, quick outfit that’ll keep you feeling stylish all day. Plus, it’s easy to repeat!
